The Gunnison Valley Health Senior Care Center has 59 licensed beds and is the only long-term residential care facility in Gunnison County. The scope of business can be separated into three general areas: skilled nursing care, Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care (or the “Special Care Unit”), and Home Medical Services. Rehabilitation services are also offered at the Senior Care Center which include both occupational and physical therapy. GVH Assisted Living accommodates 15 residential suites to serve individuals age 55 and older with a keen recognition of each individual's privacy.HEALTH SYSTEM BACKGROUNDAnnual revenues for the health system were $40.9 million in 2011 and $40.5 million in 2010. Net margins were1.1% and 2.8% respectively. The nursing home represents about 5.2 percent of total health system revenues. The health system has been financially profitable and has $8 million in reserves, almost two million at the nursing home and $6 million associated with the hospital. Although the foundation is a separate 501c3, funding for staff and operational expenses comes from the hospital.Gunnison Valley Health has been advancing a strategy to connect the pieces of the county – owned health system since 2005. In 2010 the system took a key step in the integration journey to re-brand the system; implementing a new logo and comprehensive identity package, utilizing a “Living Well Together” communications theme. The long term system strategy is to evolve into an integrated system that creates measurable improvement in the health status of the population it serves. The hospital is designated as critical access, with 24 beds. While daily census averages around 4.0, the active emergency room serves residents and visitors to the county who come primarily for sports and recreation. ER visits translate to surgeries, with 45 percent of in and outpatient surgeries resulting from orthopedic injuries. ER payor mix shows 54.1 percent commercial, 11 percent Medicaid and 21 percent Medicare. The hospital has been profitable for a number of years as a result of the dominant proportion of commercially insured patients. A newly constructed outpatient wing is generating increased, lab and imaging business with a monthly payment of $12,000.The Senior Care Center (SCC) is a top performing nursing home, serving primarily local seniors who either lived in the community before becoming residents or who were moved here by their children who are current area residents. More than sixty-five percent of resident fees are paid through Medicaid. The SCC is the only segment of the health system that receives tax support which amounts to an annual payment of around $600,000 as result of a property tax mill levy passed several years ago. The tax support allows the nursing home to break even or earn a narrow positive margin. For example, in 2011 the actual operating loss of $507,267 was offset by tax support to yield a year-end profit of $109,701.The health system delivers care in a county with unique characteristics. For example, over 65 percent of residents are between the ages of 18 and 65, and this relatively young and very active community has an overall positive health status. Population growth has been flat with about 15,000 year-round residents receiving care. However, the area experiences a dramatic population increase from seasonal residents and visitors during winter and summer. Much of the area’s economic health is driven by the seasonal visitors.POSITION SUMMARYThe Chief Executive Officer of Gunnison Valley Health is the head administrative official for the health system’s activities and is responsible for all aspects of the operations of the system. The CEO is hired for employment by the Board of Trustees is accountable to the Board of Trustees.
